Both Nissan Engineers and from JWT who has had the complete OEM code since 1990. I learned from both parties that the technology was not available at the time for the ECU software to single out knock frequencies from other engine noise. I remember the number to have been around 3000 RPM, much above that number, the knock sensor with OEM software picks up other engine sounds and will retard timing when zero knock is occurring. Nissan was working on a sophisticated system, but the technology simply was not there and could not be fully implemented. When you really need to retard for knock (in boost), the system ignores the sensor because other engine noise sounds like knock to the OEM software. The J&S unit can retard per cyl, or retard all, you have a choice when you set it up. The J&S unit software has advanced enough to know the frequency for knock over other engine noise. The software has been tweaked for the Z engine and the sound of clear knock over other engine noise is clearly heard through a set of headphones and can be displayed with LED lights.
